Open ended question:
Earthquakes happen every day all around the world. Using the link below to the United States Geological Survey website, tell me how many earthquakes happened in the United States over the last 24 hours? How big was the biggest earthquake and how small was was the smallest? Where did these earthquakes occur?
Now, choose one earthquake location. Write a paragraph to describe a possible cause for an earthquake to occur in this particular location.

EXEMPLAR: Below you can read examples of a response that is slightly less than I am looking for and one that exceeds my expectations for your paragraph. You will notice that the topic has been changed but the style, length and supports of the paragraph are precisely what I am expecting for your earthquake paragraphs.
Developing to Expectations: 2pts
there were 25
largest eruption New Mexico level 3
the smallest was in Vermont , level 1
The Pacific plate went under the North American Plate then the crust began to melt forming a volcano. This eventually erupted in Southern California.
Exceeds: 4pts
Over the last 24 hours there were 25 volcano eruptions in the United States. The largest eruption was in New Mexico at 4am and it was a level 3 on the VEI scale. The smallest eruption was in Vermont and it measured a 1 on the VEI scale.
I think the volcano in California was caused by the Pacific plate meeting up with the North American plate. I can see on the USGS map that the volcano eruption fell right next to line between the plates. My hypothesis is that the Pacific plate went under the North American Plate because I learned from the Changing Face of the Earth reading that the ocean plate is heavier. When they Pacific Plate went deep enough the crust began to melt forming a volcano. This eventually erupted in Southern California. That is what I believe happened to make a volcano erupt in this location. |
Dave,
ReplyDeleteI love that you included the USGS map - this kind of resource is what online teaching is meant to be. This is the kind of information you could not get from a text book, encyclopedia, or other print. If I were a student studying this, I would be thrilled to have something so "tangible" to explore.
Your question asks students to apply what they've been learning about plate tectonics to an authentic situation - I feel this will increase their motivation and buy-in in the assignment. You ask them to use some technical skills (reading and making meaning of the website), as well as apply what they've learned to create meaning. This is a great two tiered question.
The only critical feedback I wanted to offer was regarding your exemplars. Your responses are about volcanoes, not earthquakes. I assume this is a simple typo, and it can be cleared up really easily.
All in all, a very good question, with clear expectations. I wish I had this kind of question when I studied earth science, more of it might have stuck! Great application of what we're studying!
The volcano exemplar was purposeful. I have always thought it troublesome that the exemplar not only shows and example of what to do, it actually does it. I find that my students simply copy exactly what I did. To me this does not demonstrate an understanding. So, I gave a similar type of response but not one that can be copied.
DeleteHi Dave-
ReplyDeleteI liked your open response question, rubric, and exemplars. I thought the language was student friendly and very easy to understand. I also liked how you included a picture with your open response.
I understand why you used another topic for your exemplar. I also ran into that problem. If you used earthquakes, you would give away the answer, right?
Regarding the checklist, I think you may have left off your first question in your open response about how many earthquakes have happened in the last 24 hours.
Thanks for sharing,
Lauren
Ah ha! I had not envisioned sharing the actual exemplar with the students prior to the assessment, but I do see the merit of it. Great reason to include a parallel exemplar!
DeleteThanks for the catch on the checklist Lauren.
